Peter loved playing in Ludlow so much last year that he asked us if he could come back! Who are we to say ‘no’ to one of the country’s most respected soloists? This time he plays Schubert, Brahms, Chopin and, for the first time at Ludlow Piano Festival, Mozart. Big names from a big name.

SCHUBERTPiano Sonata in C minor, D958

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (1756-1791)
FANTASY IN C MINOR, K475 (1785)

With its free-flowing structure and sudden stark contrasts, the remarkable Fantasia is one of Mozart’s most innovative compositions. He is believed to have been influenced by the work of Bach and his son C.P.E Bach.

JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833-1897)
SECHS KLAVIERSTÜCKE OP.118 (1893)

Brahms dedicated these Six Pieces for Piano to Clara Schumann who described them as having “a wealth of feeling within the narrowest of confines”. This collection, composed late in Brahms’s life, is widely regarded as one of the most profound and intimate sets of piano pieces in the Romantic repertoire.

FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN (1810-1849)
ÉTUDES OP.25, NOS 1 – 5 (1836)

Chopin was a pioneer in transforming ‘Études’ from technical exercises into highly expressive concert pieces. Each piece blends virtuosity with expressive depth – from Étude No1 (the Aeolian Harp) with its flowing arpeggios, to the dissonant chords of Étude, No5 (Wrong Note).

FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797–1828)
PIANO SONATA IN C MINOR, D958 (1828)

Written near the end of Schubert’s life, this sonata combines dramatic intensity with lyrical beauty. Its bold opening, expressive slow movement, and energetic finale showcase Schubert’s unique blend of classical form and personal emotion.
